Mid-Century Modern in San Jose

A very nice Mid-Century-Modern style home that I shot recently for Brett Jennings/Keller Williams Bay Area Estates.

The owners of this home previously lived in an Eichler Home in the South Bay Area. It is interesting to see the influence that Eichler Homes have had in the Bay Area, and I have shot a number of high-end homes built by owners who previously lived in an Eichler Home and wanted to maintain the feel of these homes when they could afford something on a grander scale. How many other types of tract homes have exerted such an influence?

Ancient History

While reorganizing my image archives, I came across this photo from the days when I first started seriously learning architectural/interior photography. It is the atrium of the Eichler home of Catherine Munson (now deceased), who was a long-time real-estate agent based in Marin County, California, specializing in selling Eichler Homes. She started her career working as a hostess for Eichler Homes, at the open houses, and graduated to working as a sales agent for the company. I think the furnishings in Catherine's home illustrate how adaptable the homes are to a wide range of decor, even though the style of the homes themselves is quite modern. In fact, one thing Catherine became very good at, and which she developed while working for Eichler Homes, was helping prospective buyers to visualize what the homes could look like when furnished to suit the buyers' tastes.

The Wright-Eichler Connection

Many who know something of the history of Eichler Homes are aware that my grandfather (Joseph Eichler) rented a Frank Lloyd Wright house in Hillsborough, CA for a couple of years, and that it was the experience of living in that house that sparked my grandfather's interest in Modern architecture. However, many do not know that, when Eichler Homes had become an established home-building company, he sought out Wright to see if Wright might be interested in designing some homes for him, which resulted in an interesting anecdote.

When my grandfather met Wright to discuss the possibility of obtaining some designs from him, Wright asked my grandfather what his goals were. My grandfather said something like "to make affordable, high-quality modern architectural design available to the common man." According my father, Wright's reply was something like "#$%& the common man; build homes for the uncommon man." And that was the end of that.

Beautifully Updated Palo Alto Eichler Home

Here are are some photos of updated Eichler Home in Palo Alto, CA. I think the homeowner did a beautiful job with this, and I am confident that my grandfather, Joseph Eichler, the founder of Eichler Homes, would be well pleased with the result. The homeowner did the design for the updating, as well as all of the furnishings. You would think that she was a designer by profession, but that is not the case. One must remember that, after all, most Eichler Homes were originally modest tract homes, as was this one. I think it is a testament to the quality of the original designs that an update and redesign of this quality can be done with them.
